WORDS BY LINUS SANTOS Hello, fellow noob card collector! I see you’re checking this article out on how to start your own collection of wrestling cards. To be blatantly honest, I too am just starting on collecting wrestling cards. It all started when our friends from Fight Sports Manila introduced local wrestling cards by partnering with the Nutcase by making select Filipino wrestlers’ cards. From the PWOGs (Jake De Leon and Ken Warren) to Robin Sane, these cards have paved the way as a method to support the local pro-wrestling scene. Recently, FSM has partnered with World Underground Wrestling - Philippines from their last show Invasion to create cards of both local and foreign wrestlers and were for sale during the said show. The first graded local wrestling card is actually a golden Jake De Leon card, graded by Certified Sports Guaranty or CSG, one of the top card grading companies in the world. You may see the unboxing of it here. As of this writing, WWE still stands tall as the top wrestling company who collaborates with card companies. While there are also wrestling cards from All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, then-WWF cards have been around since 1985 when they partnered with Topps, one of the top trading card companies. Cards of Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, and Ric Flair from the 80’s are usually up for grabs in online stores such as eBay, especially the graded ones. So let’s start on how you can build your own wrestling card collection. First, know what you’re going after. Do some research for a bit and find out what cards are good to start with and such. If you’re new to the hobby, try first with what you can afford. There’s no need to rush into those expensive ones. Online shops on Shopee such as mommy_con and excess vanity sell cards that are budget-friendly. If you have extra funds to spend, you may go for the mid-level cards. These kinds of cards are usually sold at around Php 200-500, depending on what type of card it is and who’s in it. If you’re rich and such, (please sponsor us jk) you can go for the expensive ones such as those with a piece of the ring mat or gear, autograph ones, or even rare graded cards. If you’re planning on buying sealed packs or boxes, there’s a chance that you might pull something of value and unexpected. There are also Facebook groups that sell cards, packs, and boxes. One particular FB group, Wrestling Cards Philippines, is an emerging FB group that specializes in just wrestling cards in the country. Not being biased or anything but I honestly wouldn’t know that wrestling cards is an emerging market had it not been for the online group. You may buy, sell, and trade in the FB group.
This coming February 19, Kayfabe Café, alongside with Wrestling Cards Philippines, Fight Sports Manila, channelfourteen.com, Cardsbros Hobby Shop, Manila Wrestling Federation, and World Underground Wrestling - Philippines, will be hosting the first ever DeXcon: a wrestling card meet and viewing party.
