WORDS BY LINUS SANTOS Manila Wrestling Federation is back for this year and they started things with a bang! Partnering with one of Japan’s wrestling promotions, Kyushu Pro-Wrestling, they produced a show that people won’t forget! Taped last April 14. 2024 at the UP Film Institute Center in Quezon City, the crowd showed no fatigue as they supported their favorites during the show. From the opening match towards the end, the fans loved every moment of the show! That being said, here are three (spoiler-free) things to look forward to in watching MWF x QPro: Kasaysayan! PURORESU SA PINAS It’s no surprise that Japanese wrestling has its reach here in the Philippines. From Japanese promoters hosting shows here to well-known Japanese wrestlers appearing, puroresu has influenced modern Pinoy wrestling. In Kasaysayan, the Kyushu Pro-Wrestling stars showcased what they can do. From Mentai Kid’s endurance to Hitamaru Sasaki’s stiff strikes, they have shown what puroresu is all about. They brought energy and entertainment that fans loved while watching the show and will surely be appreciated by those watching it on Rock of Manila TV. The QPro wrestlers gave local fans what they can do and have shown that they love the art they are doing. That being said, our local talents have also stepped up in this show. They’ve shown that they are capable of matching the energy and passion the guests have shown. From Isaiah Valencia’s dedication to CJ Serafin’s resilience, our local talents have proven they can catch up with the foreigners who are more experienced. One thing guaranteed while watching the show on Rock of Manila TV is that you will definitely feel the passion from both rosters. SUMMER CHILLS During the show, MWF Commissioner Sonny Go announced the return of the Chilly Willy Cup. To refreshen your memory, Chilly Willy is a crucial person to Pinoy wrestling. The former ECW wrestler has trained a lot of wrestlers in the scene since 2017. Since then, he has been passing knowledge he gained in Extreme Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling’s Power Plant, and in the US independent scene. You can check out our podcast episode with Coach Chilly here to learn more about Everybody’s Favorite Homeboy! As of this posting, two matches have been announced so far: “Ang Bagong Anak ng Bayan” El Katipunero versus Serafin Liwanag, the newest member of the Bahay ng Liwanag. The second match is Nigel “Suplex” San Jose versus the inaugural Chilly Willy Cup winner and ½ of the WUW World Tag Team Champions, Ken Cifer. We expect more names to be announced soon and you can be sure that those involved in the tournament will be giving their all in honoring Coach Chilly. CREAM OF THE CROPS
The two main events of the entire show proved why they both deserved to be put there. Let’s start with the first main event: Jake De Leon defending his MWF Pinoy Wrestling Title against “Danger” Rex Lawin. You may not know but the two have a history with each other. In 2019, JDL and Rex challenged for the AWGC Tag Team Titles in Hong Kong Pro-Wrestling Federation. The titles were then held by Kevin and Jeff Man, the Man Bros. They weren’t able to capture the tag titles but you can tell that there was a sense of respect that was made between them. 5 years later, they cross paths once more, this time as foes. Rex has been hounding the MWF Pinoy Wrestling Title for quite some time now. He has been relentlessly showcasing his victims on social media and telling people why he deserves to be the champion. Jake De Leon, on the other hand, has been grinding in the gym and preparing for his title defense. The two clashed in the show and showed why they are at the top of MWF right now. From Rex’s strikes to JDL’s swagger, the two gave their best in the match and showcased that they are not to be trifled with. The second main event was the tag team match between Jomar and Aso-San versus TAJIRI and Fabio Makisig. Jomar, now removed from the Bahay ng Liwanag, aims to create a new chapter in his career and what a way to start it by tagging with the literal mountain of a man that is Aso-San. Fabio, on the other hand, can’t contain his excitement tagging with his mentor. You could see in his smile that it’s a dream come true for him. As the match goes on, so do the hard kicks and chops given by the two teams to each other. It’s also noteworthy that both Fabio and Jomar have been invited by TAJIRI to train in QPro. You may support them here as they still continue to gather resources for their trip.
